Retrieve or Check Your Nigerian NIN in the UK

Forgotten your NIN or lost the slip? You can usually get it back without registering again. These are the legitimate ways to check your NIN from the UK.

How do I check my NIN number in the UK?

From the UK, the simplest options are NIMC's official NINAuth mobile app, dialling *346# from the Nigerian phone number linked to your NIN (if it works on roaming), or checking the enrolment slip from your appointment. If you enrolled with us, contact us with your name and enrolment details and we will help you follow it up.

Only use official NIMC channels or the centre where you enrolled. Your NIN is personal data, and websites that ask for your details and a fee to "find" your NIN are not official.

Ways to retrieve your NIN

1. NIMC's official mobile app

NIMC's official app, NINAuth, lets NIN holders view and verify their NIN and control who can access their data. Download it only from the Apple App Store or Google Play, published by NIMC. Setting it up may need the phone number or email linked to your NIN.

2. The *346# code

Dial *346# and choose NIN retrieval. This only works from the Nigerian phone number you used for enrolment, and the network charges a small fee. From the UK it only works if your Nigerian SIM is active and roaming.

3. Your enrolment slip

Your enrolment slip shows your transaction ID, and your NIN once it has been generated. Check your emails and photos too; many people photograph the slip on the day.

4. The centre where you enrolled

If you enrolled at our Dalston centre, contact us with your full name, date of birth and roughly when you enrolled. We can help you follow up your record.

5. NIMC directly

You can contact NIMC through the channels listed on the official NIMC website. Have your full name, date of birth and any enrolment details ready.

What to have ready

  • Full name exactly as used at enrolment
  • Date of birth
  • The phone number and email you gave at enrolment
  • Your transaction ID, if you still have the slip
  • Roughly when and where you enrolled

Lost your NIN slip?

Losing the paper slip does not mean you have lost your NIN. Your NIN stays the same for life. You can get the number again through the options above, and NIMC offers official ways to get a new slip. Do not enrol again to get a new number: a second enrolment can create a duplicate record that has to be resolved later.

My NIN has not been generated yet

If you enrolled recently and have not received your NIN, it may still be processing. Timing is controlled by NIMC and some records take longer, especially if details need checking. If you enrolled with us, contact us with your transaction ID and we will check on it. Read how long it takes to get a NIN in the UK.

I never registered for NIN

If you never enrolled, there is nothing to retrieve, so you need a new registration. See NIN registration in the UK, or book a NIN appointment at our London centre.

Wrong details on your NIN?

If you find your NIN but the name, date of birth or phone number is wrong, you need a modification, not a new registration. See NIN updates and corrections in the UK.

Protecting your NIN

Your NIN gives access to your identity record, so treat it like a passport number.

  • Do not post photos of your NIN slip online.
  • Never share verification codes sent to your phone.
  • Use NIMC's app to control who can verify your identity.
  • Be suspicious of messages saying your NIN will be "deactivated" unless you pay.
