The enrolment appointment itself is short, and you leave with an enrolment slip the same day. Issuing the NIN is then up to NIMC: many people receive it within a few working days, but it can take longer, especially if details need checking. Nobody outside NIMC can guarantee a date, so plan ahead if you have a passport or bank deadline.
The timeline, stage by stage
| Stage | Who controls it | What affects the time |
|---|---|---|
| NPC birth attestation | National Population Commission | Whether your details match NPC records; payment problems |
| NIMC pre-enrolment | You | Usually completed in one sitting online |
| Booking an appointment | You and the centre | Available appointment slots |
| Enrolment appointment | The centre | Document checks, number of people enrolling |
| NIN issued | NIMC | Data checks, duplicate checks, system load |
What causes delays?
- The NPC record is not ready. You cannot enrol without the digitised certificate number.
- Mismatched details. Different spellings or dates of birth across your documents can lead to extra checks.
- Possible duplicate records. If you were partly enrolled before, in Nigeria or abroad, NIMC may need to resolve it.
- System downtime. NIMC systems occasionally have outages that slow processing for everyone.
How to get your NIN as quickly as possible
- Complete your NPC attestation as early as possible.
- Make sure your names and date of birth match across your passport, NPC record and pre-enrolment form.
- Bring every document to the appointment. See the requirements.
- Keep your enrolment slip and transaction ID safe.
If you need a NIN for a passport deadline
A Nigerian passport application asks for your NIN, so do not book a passport appointment until you have the NIN itself, not just the enrolment slip. Read do you need NIN to renew a Nigerian passport in the UK?
Still waiting?
If you enrolled at our centre and your NIN has not arrived, message us with your transaction ID and we will help you follow it up. You can also try the official retrieval methods on our NIN retrieval page.
Enrolment slip vs NIN: what is the difference?
The enrolment slip proves you have been enrolled and gives you a transaction ID. It is not your NIN. Your NIN is generated by NIMC after it processes your record. Most services that ask for a NIN, including passport applications, need the NIN itself.
Planning around deadlines
- Passport renewal: enrol well before you plan to apply, and only book the passport appointment once you have your NIN.
- Travel: do not book flights that depend on a new passport until the passport is issued.
- Bank deadlines: contact your bank early and ask what it will accept while you wait for your NIN.
NIN timing FAQs
Can you guarantee when I will receive my NIN?
No. NIMC processes every record and controls the timing. Be wary of anyone who guarantees a date.
Can I pay extra to get my NIN faster?
NIMC sets processing times. The quickest route is to have every document ready and your details correct at enrolment. Be wary of anyone selling a NIN "fast track".
What if my NIN still has not come after several weeks?
If you enrolled with us, send us your transaction ID and we will help you follow it up.
