Can I update my NIN details from the UK?
Yes, in most cases. NIMC lets NIN holders change some details, such as name, phone number and address, through its online self-service platform, while other changes need supporting documents or a visit to an enrolment centre. Date of birth can usually be changed only once. Message us with what needs changing and we will tell you which route applies.
A NIN modification (also called a NIN update or NIN correction) changes the details held against your existing NIN. You keep the same NIN; only the record is updated. You do not need to register again, and you should not, because a second enrolment can cause a duplicate record.
Common NIN changes
NIN name correction
For a spelling mistake or a missing middle name, NIMC asks for proof of the correct name, usually your passport and other official ID showing the name as it should be.
NIN change of name
For a change of name after marriage, divorce or by choice, NIMC typically asks for supporting documents such as a marriage certificate, a sworn affidavit and a newspaper publication of the name change, together with ID in the new name. NIMC limits how many times a name can be changed online.
NIN date of birth correction
Date of birth is the most tightly controlled change. NIMC generally allows it to be changed only once, and expects an NPC birth record that shows the correct date. Make sure the date on your NPC record is right before you apply, because a second correction may not be possible.
NIN phone number update
Your phone number on the NIN record is used for verification codes and for NIN retrieval by text. Updating it is usually one of the simpler changes and can be done through NIMC's self-service platform.
Address and other details
Address and some other personal details can generally be updated online as well. Changes to sensitive data, or records that NIMC has flagged, may need a visit to an enrolment centre.
NIMC sets the rules, documents and fees for each type of change, and it updates them from time to time. Always check the current requirements on the official NIMC website before you pay for anything. Avoid anyone who offers to "fix" your NIN without official documents.
Tell us what needs changing
Message us on WhatsApp with the detail that is wrong and what it should say. We will tell you which route applies and what to prepare.
How we can help at our London centre
At our Dalston centre we can:
- look at your NIN slip and documents and tell you which type of change you need;
- help you understand which documents NIMC is likely to ask for;
- assist with updates that are handled through an enrolment centre;
- print and copy your supporting documents.
Not every change can be completed at an enrolment centre. Some are only processed by NIMC through its own platform or offices, and some, such as a second date of birth change, are not allowed at all. We will tell you honestly if we cannot do something, before you pay.
How do I update my NIN?
- Find your NIN. You need your NIN or your enrolment slip. If you have lost it, see how to retrieve your NIN in the UK.
- Identify the change. Name correction, change of name, date of birth, phone number or address.
- Gather your evidence. Passport, NPC birth record, marriage certificate, affidavit or other documents, depending on the change.
- Choose the route. NIMC self-service online, or assistance through an enrolment centre.
- Pay the NIMC modification fee shown for that change.
- Wait for the update to show. Some changes reflect quickly; others take several weeks while NIMC reviews them.
Our guide how to update or correct your NIN details in the UK goes through each step in more detail.
Which route applies to you?
| Change | Usual route | Main evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Phone number | NIMC self-service | Access to your NIMC account |
| Address | NIMC self-service | Usually none beyond your details |
| Spelling correction | Self-service or centre | Passport or ID showing correct spelling |
| Change of name | Self-service or centre | Marriage certificate or affidavit, newspaper publication, ID in new name |
| Date of birth (once only) | Self-service or centre | NPC birth record with the correct date |
| Flagged or blocked record | NIMC directly | As requested by NIMC |
Mistakes to avoid when updating your NIN
- Applying for a date of birth change with the wrong date. You may not get a second chance.
- Using a different spelling on the update form from the one on your evidence.
- Paying unofficial "NIN fixers". Pay only through official NIMC channels.
- Starting a passport application before the change has reflected on your record.
- Enrolling again instead of modifying, which can create a duplicate record.
After your update
Once the change shows on your record, check that the details on your bank accounts, BVN and any passport application match. If your bank still holds the old details, contact it so the records line up.
Why it matters for passports and banks
Your Nigerian passport, bank accounts and BVN are increasingly checked against your NIN. If the name or date of birth on your NIN does not match your passport, you may have problems with a passport renewal or a bank verification. It is worth fixing a mismatch before you start a passport application. Read NIN and Nigerian passport renewal in the UK.
NIN updates: frequently asked questions
Can I change my date of birth on my NIN more than once?
NIMC generally allows a date of birth change only once, so make sure the new date is correct and supported by your NPC birth record before you apply.
Do I need to register again if my NIN details are wrong?
No. You update your existing record. Registering again can create a duplicate record, which causes more problems.
How long does a NIN modification take?
It depends on the change and on NIMC. Simple changes can reflect quickly, while name and date of birth changes may take several weeks to be reviewed.
How much does a NIN modification cost?
NIMC charges a fee for each type of change, and the fee for date of birth changes is higher than for other updates. Check the current fee on the NIMC website or ask us for help.
Can you update my NIN phone number?
Phone number updates are usually done through NIMC's self-service platform. Message us if you need help with it.
Can I correct my NIN without going to Nigeria?
Yes, in most cases. Many changes can be made online through NIMC's self-service platform, and others can be handled with the help of an enrolment centre in the UK.
What if my NIN record is blocked or flagged?
A blocked or flagged record usually has to be resolved by NIMC directly. Contact NIMC through its official channels; we can help you understand what it is asking for.
