NIN Registration for Children in the UK

Children of Nigerian parents living in the UK can be enrolled for NIN at our Dalston, London centre. The child attends with a parent or guardian who has a NIN.

How do I register my child for NIN in the UK?

First get your child's NPC record (a foreign birth notification if they were born outside Nigeria, $80.00). Then book an appointment, and bring the child, their birth certificate, and one parent's Nigerian passport and NIN. Child enrolment at our London centre costs £80.00 in total.

Child NIN registration follows the same process as adult enrolment, with one key difference: the child's record is linked to a parent's NIN. That is why the parent's NIN and passport are part of the child's document list.

Which children can be enrolled?

  • Children born in Nigeria who now live in the UK.
  • Children born in the UK or elsewhere abroad to a Nigerian parent.

Our child category and fee apply to children under 16. If your child is 16 or 17, message us before booking and we will confirm which category and documents apply.

Documents for child NIN registration

  • NPC record for the child: birth registration (born in Nigeria) or foreign birth notification (born abroad) from the National Population Commission.
  • The child's birth certificate.
  • One parent's Nigerian passport.
  • One parent's NIN.
  • A debit or credit card for the fees.

See all NIN registration requirements if you are also enrolling yourself.

Getting the NPC foreign birth notification

Most children born in the UK need the NPC foreign birth notification. You apply online at foreignbirth.nationalpopulation.gov.ng, pay $80.00 (MasterCard only), and keep the digitised certificate number it gives you. This must be done before the NIN appointment.

Need help with your child's documents?

Message us on WhatsApp with your child's age and place of birth and we will tell you what to prepare.

Parent and guardian requirements

The child must attend in person with a parent or legal guardian. The accompanying parent brings their own Nigerian passport and NIN.

What if the parent does not have a NIN? The parent can enrol at the same visit. Book enough time for both of you and bring both sets of documents. See adult NIN registration for the parent's document list.

If someone other than a parent will bring the child, contact us before booking to check what proof of guardianship is needed.

How much does child NIN registration cost?

Child NIN enrolment at our London centre costs £80.00: the NIMC enrolment fee of $51.95 (£40.00) plus our £40.00 centre fee. The NPC foreign birth notification ($80.00) is paid separately, directly to the NPC.

See the full fee breakdown for adult and child fees side by side.

What happens at a child's appointment?

  1. We check the child's NPC record, birth certificate and the parent's passport and NIN.
  2. The fees are paid.
  3. We confirm the child's details with you. Check the spelling of every name and the date of birth.
  4. We capture the child's photograph and any biometrics required for their age.
  5. You receive the child's enrolment slip with a transaction ID.

Young children can find waiting difficult, so book a time that suits them and bring something to keep them occupied.

Common family situations

Only one parent is Nigerian

That is fine. The Nigerian parent's passport and NIN are used for the child's enrolment, and the Nigerian parent should attend.

The child has a different surname from the parent

This is common and is usually not a problem, as long as the child's birth certificate and NPC record show the parent's details. Bring the birth certificate so the link is clear.

Parents are separated

Either parent with a NIN can bring the child, provided the documents link them to the child. If you are a guardian rather than a parent, contact us first.

The child was born in Nigeria but now lives in the UK

Use the NPC birth registration rather than the foreign birth notification. If the birth was never registered in Nigeria, message us before booking.

Why parents enrol children early

  • Passports: a Nigerian passport application asks for the child's NIN.
  • Travel plans: the NPC step can take longer than expected, so leaving it late can affect a trip.
  • Exams in Nigeria: young people who later sit Nigerian exams such as JAMB's UTME are asked for a NIN.

Child NIN: frequently asked questions

Does my child need to attend the appointment?

Yes. The child must attend in person so their photograph and biometrics can be captured. They must come with a parent or legal guardian.

Can I enrol my child if I do not have a NIN?

The child's enrolment needs a parent's NIN. If you do not have one, you can enrol at the same visit. Tell us when you book so we can allow enough time.

Does a baby need a NIN?

Children of any age can be enrolled, and many parents enrol young children so the NIN is ready for a Nigerian passport application. Message us if you are enrolling a baby and we will tell you what to bring.

My child was born in the UK. Do they still need an NPC record?

Yes. A child born outside Nigeria needs the NPC foreign birth notification ($80.00) before NIN enrolment.

Can I enrol two or more children at once?

Yes. Mention how many children are coming when you book, and bring each child's documents.

Does my child need a Nigerian passport to get a NIN?

No. For a child, the parent's Nigerian passport is used, together with the child's birth certificate and NPC record.

Can the child's NIN be done before their Nigerian passport?

Yes, and that is the usual order, because the passport application asks for the NIN.
