To update your NIN from the UK, work out what kind of change you need, gather the evidence for it (for example passport, NPC birth record, marriage certificate or affidavit), then apply through NIMC's self-service platform or with help from an enrolment centre. Date of birth can generally be changed only once, so get it right.
For the services we offer, see NIN updates and corrections in the UK. This guide helps you prepare.
Step 1: Decide what type of change you need
| Change | Example | Evidence usually needed |
|---|---|---|
| Name correction | "Olubunmi" recorded as "Olubummi" | Passport or other official ID showing the correct spelling |
| Change of name | New married surname | Marriage certificate or affidavit, newspaper publication, ID in new name |
| Date of birth | Wrong year recorded | NPC birth record showing the correct date |
| Phone number | Old Nigerian SIM no longer used | Access to your NIMC account and the new number |
| Address | Moved house | Usually updated online |
The evidence above is a general guide. NIMC sets the exact requirements and fees and can change them, so check the official NIMC website before you apply.
Step 2: Check the date of birth rule
NIMC generally allows a date of birth change only once. Before you apply, make sure your NPC birth record shows the correct date. If the NPC record is wrong too, that has to be corrected first, or your NIN change may be rejected.
Step 3: Get your documents in order
Scan or photograph your documents clearly. Names should match across everything you submit. If you need copies printed, we can do this at our office.
Step 4: Choose your route
- Online, through NIMC's self-service platform – suits simple changes such as phone number, address or a straightforward name correction.
- With help from an enrolment centre – useful if you are not confident online, your change needs supporting documents checked, or NIMC has asked you to visit a centre.
Not sure which applies? Message us on WhatsApp with what is wrong and what it should say.
Step 5: Pay the modification fee
Each type of change has a NIMC fee, and the date of birth fee is higher than the others. Pay only through official channels.
Step 6: Wait for the change to reflect
Simple updates can show quickly. Name and date of birth changes may take several weeks while NIMC reviews them. Avoid starting a passport application until the change has reflected.
Do not re-register
Enrolling again to "start fresh" does not replace your old record. It can create a duplicate, which blocks your NIN until it is resolved.
Examples of evidence that works
- Spelling correction: a Nigerian passport showing the correct spelling.
- Marriage name change: marriage certificate plus ID in the new name.
- Date of birth: NPC record showing the correct date (fix the NPC record first if it is wrong).
Weak evidence, such as a letter you wrote yourself, a document with a third spelling, or a blurred photo, is a common reason for rejection.
Checklist before you submit
- Is the new detail spelt exactly as on your evidence?
- Is this your one date of birth change? Is the date definitely correct?
- Are your scans clear and complete?
- Are you paying through an official channel?
