Mistakes to Avoid Before Your NIN Enrolment Appointment

Nigerian National Identity Card issued by NIMC, showing the holder's NIN details

The mistakes that most often delay NIN enrolment are: arriving without the NPC digitised certificate number, skipping NIMC pre-enrolment, names spelt differently across documents, a wrong date of birth, and bringing a child without the parent's NIN. Each one is easy to fix before your appointment and hard to fix on the day.

1. No NPC certificate number

The problem: the NPC birth attestation is required for every enrolment, and without the digitised certificate number the enrolment cannot go ahead.
The fix: complete your NPC application well before your appointment and save the certificate number as a screenshot.

2. Skipping pre-enrolment

The problem: without a pre-enrolment reference, your details have to be entered from scratch, which takes longer and makes typing mistakes more likely.
The fix: complete NIMC pre-enrolment online and bring the reference.

3. Names that do not match

The problem: a missing middle name, a different spelling or a married name on one document.
The fix: compare your passport, NPC record and pre-enrolment form side by side. If they differ, message us first.

4. A wrong date of birth

The problem: NIMC generally allows a date of birth change only once, and corrections take time.
The fix: make sure the date is correct on your NPC record and pre-enrolment form before the appointment, and check it again when we read your details back.

5. Bringing a child without a parent's NIN

The problem: a child's record is linked to a parent's NIN.
The fix: bring the parent's NIN and passport. If the parent has no NIN, book time for the parent to enrol too. See child NIN registration.

6. Paying for the wrong NPC service

The problem: people born abroad sometimes apply on the attestation portal meant for people born in Nigeria, or the other way round.
The fix: born in Nigeria = attestation portal. Born abroad = foreign birth portal. See the requirements.

7. Registering again instead of retrieving

The problem: people who lost their NIN sometimes enrol again, which can create a duplicate record.
The fix: try to retrieve your NIN first.

8. Arriving late or without payment

The problem: the NIMC fee is paid before enrolment starts.
The fix: bring a debit or credit card, arrive 10–15 minutes early and check the current fees.

Use our NIN appointment checklist the night before to make sure you have everything.

The two-minute pre-appointment check

  1. Open your NPC confirmation: is the certificate number there?
  2. Open your pre-enrolment confirmation: is the reference there?
  3. Compare names on passport and NPC record: identical?
  4. Check your date of birth: correct everywhere?
  5. Card in your wallet?

If you answer "no" to any of these, message us before you travel.
